Song Titles : A local camera club that I'm in had it's first competition night of the year on September 27th, 2012. The category was "Song Titles". This category was something that holds dual passion for me - music, and telling stories with photography. I was very excited about the category when announced in the spring. I started thinking through this by making a large list of actual songs which follow two rules: 1) I'm passionate about the song, and 2) the song needs an interesting story that can be told through photography. I expect that this growing list is something that I'll be working on for many years to come even though the competition is now over. In the competition itself, there are only 5 entries that you can make. Entries correspond to the formats: digital, print - small, print - medium, print - large & print - black and white. The tough part for me was to cull my huge list down to 5 entries for the competition that would have enough impact to hold their weight in a competition. I shot the initial 7 below, and entered 5 into the competition (leaving out the Sammy Hagar and Bob Dylan shots). Two of my 5 entries won first place: "A Rose for Emily" (The Zombies) in the print - large format, and "Waiting on a Train" (Johnny Cash) in the print - black and white format. Of the 7 initial pictures, these two are the ones that had the most initial notes, thoughts and planning. A suggestion for budding photographers out there: plan your photo before you touch your camera. Keep detailed notes of how you see the photograph or composite in your mind. Strive for those details when you're actually taking your photograph. Let your models know what to show up with on the day of the shoot - right down to nail colour, clothing details and makeup (if you're not bringing a MUA onto the shoot with you). I truly believe that the mental work that goes into telling a story like this will take your skills to the next level. Don't "cop out" and go through your library of photos trying to match a picture to a theme - you won't grow like that. Skate Boarding : On a Sunday in September, I happened by this group of guys who were boarding down a large hill near downtown Edmonton. The amazing thing about these guys was that the end of the hill ended in a hair-pin corner that they needed to make it around or face some serious injury. The were likely going 60km per hour when they reached the bottom of the hill, and to watch them navigate the corner was breath taking!

Nuremberg 2013-May : Images taken on a business trip to Nuremberg, Germany from May 5 until May 9, 2013. During the trip - on May 8, 2013 - I visited the site of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg Germany. It wasn't until the next day when I realized that my visit was on the 68th anniversary of the Nazi's unconditional surrender on May 8th, 1945 ending the second world war in Europe... Some of the images in this gallery are funny/goofy, some are here for their beauty, and others are very serious and somber. I hope you enjoy them in their entirety!
